Edouard Langlois and his wife Jeanne Chateau founded their winemaking estate in 1885. Later generations carefully expanded the estate, building one of the finest and most representative vineyard holdings in the Loire Valley, a region known around the world for the quality, variety and value of its wines. The Loire Valley is France’s second largest producer of sparkling wine, so it was fitting that, in 1973, the Bollinger family took an ownership interest in Langlois-Chateau. Today Langlois-Chateau is best known for its rich and elegant Crémant de Loire sparkling wines, some of the finest in the region.
The Muscadet de Sevre et Maine by Langlois-Chateau comes from the Domaine de Grand Maison in the municipality of Saint-Fiacre. 10 hectares are planted there with the Muscadet variety Melon de Bourgogne, the vines have an age of 15 to 30 years. Until the spring after the harvest, it is aged with the yeasts to give the wine additional depth and abundance. The ‘sur lie’ indicates gentle lees ageing for a period of up to 4 months, giving the wine a richer, rounder texture to balance out the vibrant, racing acidity. This creates a high-class Muscadet, which is ideally suited as a companion for fish dishes or oysters.
