Winemaker Giuseppe Losapio founded Azienda Uggiano in the early 1970s, and steadily developed the estate at San Vincenzo a Torri. It is now one of the leading producers in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone, producing classic and classy Tuscan reds from the region's principal grape varieties. A core of quality runs through an unfussy, practical and exceptionally well-priced range, from bright entry level Chianti to some impressive Riserva wines.
The Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes are sourced from Uggiano's vineyards - which stretch over the hillsides joining Montespertoli with Montelupo Fiorentino and San Casciano Val di Pesa. After hand-harvesting, gentle crushing and fermentation, the wine is aged in large oak botti for 14 months, then rested in bottle for at least a further 12 months before release. Pronounced aromas of ripe black fruit, morello cherry with floral hints and a touch of lightly spicy oak. The palate is richly-flavoured with plum, wild cherry fruit, balsamic notes and firm but ripe tannins - leading on to a long, dry and savoury finish. Fantastic with a Florentine steak!
Tasting Note:
